What Issues Require Attention During the Production of Polystyrene Boards?

During the manufacturing process of polystyrene boards, manufacturers must pay close attention to the extrusion process. To enhance their products' market competitiveness, many manufacturers strictly regulate their extrusion procedures during production, thereby improving the overall quality of the boards. By implementing effective controls right from the initial stages—specifically during the extrusion phase—they can successfully ensure consistent board quality. The addition of flame retardants is a particularly critical step in the production of polystyrene boards. Since polystyrene is inherently combustible, the boards are highly susceptible to ignition. Consequently, it is standard practice during production to incorporate flame-retardant additives to effectively delay or mitigate rapid combustion.

Generally speaking, polystyrene boards cannot be put into service without the inclusion of flame retardants. Furthermore, during the manufacturing process, attention must also be paid to surface treatment—specifically, the "peeling" or roughening process. The primary function of this treatment is to enhance the bonding strength of the polystyrene boards and to relieve any internal stresses present within the material; therefore, this surface preparation is a necessary step prior to installation. Regarding storage, polystyrene boards must be kept in a dry environment and shielded from direct sunlight, as exposure to sun can easily accelerate the aging of the material. Additionally, the storage environment must not be excessively humid, as high moisture levels can compromise the boards' performance properties. Finally, measures should be taken to protect the boards from insects and animals; since foam boards are relatively fragile and soft, they are highly susceptible to damage from biting or gnawing. Given the low permeability of polystyrene boards, it is essential to prevent external moisture ingress when utilizing them in construction or insulation applications. During rainy seasons or periods of high precipitation, the use of these foam boards serves as an effective barrier against the penetration of water vapor.
